Hiking The Top of the Murchison Falls trail is about 45 minutes from the bottom of the falls. The trail is not so steep so it can be hiked by everyone. The top of the falls hike is somehow challenging and a rejuvenating activity, it will help your joints stress out, and it will make your blood run thoroughly through all your veins. And as you reach the top of the falls, wow, it is tranquil as you feel the water droplets falling on your face to cool you off.
Hiking to the top of the falls will expose you to Mother Nature’s wondrous gorge, also known as the devils cauldron. The gorge is the most invigorating view in Murchison falls national park. You will see masses of water trying to squeeze through the narrow gorge of about six meters. The force at which the water fixes through the gorge is too much that it makes the ground tremble with vibrations. The roars of the water as it hits the rocks are magnificent and thunderous, all exposing the beauty of nature.
Along the trail, there is a long stretch of steps that you will keep ascending until you reach the top, you will feel like crawling at some point from exhaustion and yet with every step you ascend, the fall’s view gets even better and better. Even its sister fall called, “Uhuru fall” suddenly comes into clear view. Uhuru fall was formed as a result of a breaking away of water from the Murchison falls, forming another fall right at the time of Uganda’s independence in 1962 hence giving it the name Uhuru, a Kiswahili word that means independence. The scenery at this point, is simply spectacular.
You will enjoy the story as they unfold and told by the guides about Winston Churchill, and it is the reason as to why the trail is called the “Winston Churchill trail”. It is believed that the same trail was used by an English explorer called Winston Churchill as he trekked down from the top of the falls in 1907 and he reached the River Nile, where, he sailed to Northern Uganda and then to southern Sudan. Perhaps, he felt the same refreshing coolness as the mist fell on his face from the water hitting the rocks.
It is ideal to have a right gear before you think of hiking to the top of the falls. Nice hiking sneakers are a good idea. It is ideal also to wear light clothes because the activity is somehow tire some and you might feel hot.
Last but not least, you should not forget your camera to take some of the beautiful photos, perhaps you need them as souvenir take back home. Murchison falls National Park is always ready to receive all visitors and its wonders are flaunted all through the park.
The entire River Nile squeezes through a tiny space of 7 meters between the rocks, emerging with a powerful explosion and plunging 42 meters to the bottom. This is also the world’s strongest waterfall.
