The stunning Kyambura Gorge locally known as Chambura also called the “Valley of Apes” is located in the far eastern corner of the well- known Queen Elizabeth National Park in south western Uganda. The Gorge is one of the most scenic Gorges in the East African Rift Valley tract.
Extending about 1km in width and 100m in depth, Kyambura gorge stands as an amazing scenic feature suitable for sight-seeing experience.
Kyambura Gorge is the only place in Queen Elizabeth National Park where can see and hear habituated Chimpanzees, as they are being habituated, a process which takes up to two years.
Kyambura gorge is one of the only place where this Chimpanzees can be found on your Queen Elizabeth national park tour either way it also contains a good number of other wildlife and birds as it’s a water source to animals within the park.
Chimpanzees tracking in Gorge takes two shifts that is beginning at 8 am and 2 pm respectively.
The cost of tracking Chimpanzee at Kyambura Gorge cost USD 50 for foreign non-residents compared to Kibale National Park chimpanzee tracking permits cost USD150 for foreign non-residents per person, the trek which usually takes one to three hours per shift making Kyambura gorge a perfect and budget place to track the Chimpanzees.
The Gorge is also a home to other primates namely black and white colobus, red-tailed monkey and the vervet monkey.
Chimps’ trekking at the gorge is an amazing encounter which involves hiking. The narrow walls make down hike and up hike quite challenging but memorable to especially the travellers.
On the gorge floor, there lies the majestic Kyambura River with populations of resident hippos which make it very exciting to explore.
The tropical forest also supports counts of birds species namely African crake, croaking cisticola, grey backed fiscal, black headed gonolek, brown snake eagle among others can be seen in the forest within the gorge.
The way to the ravine is also a magnificent spot for picnics. The gorge is one of a kind giving you great perspective to the guests down the forest offering a great photography. You will absolutely love tracking Chimpanzees in the scenic Kyambura Gorge and its environs.
